Technology Protects Endangered Animals

The advancement of technology has definitely benefited humans in various ways. On top of that, it is being used to help the animal kingdom, as well.

Recently, scientists and environmental activists have attempted to utilize technology to protect two endangered species: the honeybee and the whale.

Honeybees

Honeybees play a vital role in our planet’s ecosystem. However, their numbers have dwindled throughout the world, including Korea. One of the reasons has been due to predators named the Asian predatory wasp* and the northern giant hornet,* two invasive insects native to Asia.

Asian predatory wasps are known to hunt bees carrying honey back to their hives. They attack and kill the flying bees in order to steal their honey. Meanwhile, northern giant hornets have spread to North America in recent years, where they are called “murder hornets” due to their ferocity.

In response, scientists in the United States have mobilized drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras.* These drones fly around in search of the invasive insects and their hives. It takes the flying machines seconds to recognize and transmit the location of the creatures.

Whales

Schools of whales can be found traveling in the ocean in search of food. However, the whales can come close to passing ships, and occasionally, there have been serious collisions between the large marine animals and the vessels.

Recently, a non-profit group in Chile deployed a device that may help to prevent such accidents. A large electric buoy was placed in the Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 kilometers off the coast of the South American nation.

Whales use sound to map their movements, hunt, and communicate with each other. The A.I.* powered buoy is designed to listen for the whale sounds and identify the animals’ location. This information is then sent to nearby ships so that potential crashes can be avoided.
