Display panels and monitors for smart devices are evolving at breakneck speed. Since the introduction of foldable phones several years ago, companies have been looking for ways to make screens even more flexible. Recently, two domestic companies showed off the prototypes of their latest displays that stretch and slide in new ways. Stretchable Display LG Display is the manufacturer and supplier of various display panels and screens. In November, it unveiled the world’s first stretchable display, which can be folded and twisted without damaging the screen. According to the company, the malleable device can be stretched to add up to 20 percent in screen size. This means that the 12-inch color display can be easily extended to 14 inches. It is not only thin and light, but also more durable than other flexible screens out on the market. The remarkable high-resolution display is made with a special silicone material that gives it a rubber-like quality. In theory, it can be attached to curved surfaces such as skin, clothing, and furniture. So, the technology can be expected to be used by LG in various wearable and portable devices. Slidable Screen Samsung Display also released a prototype of its latest slidable display. It was demonstrated in September at a conference in California hosted by U.S. technology company Intel, which also aided Samsung in building the prototype. The tablet-like device has a 13- inch screen that can be slowly rolled out horizontally. When fully expanded, it can function as a 17- inch screen. So far, Samsung has not divulged how it plans to utilize this slidable OLED technology. However, we can be sure that it will show up in the company’s smart products in the future. |
