The Power of Dad Jokes

“How do celebrities keep cool? They have lots of fans.”

Maybe the above joke made you laugh, but more likely, it made you wince. That would be a perfectly natural response, because it is an example of a “dad joke.”

Dad jokes are jokes with a punchline based on a bad pun or play on words. Although the jokes are wholesome, they are usually considered to be corny or unfunny.

These jokes are called dad jokes because for some reason, fathers especially love to tell them. These dads regularly come up with cheesy puns and share them with their children. But instead of laughing, their kids usually respond by groaning and rolling their eyes.

Most people think that these awful jokes are merely the evidence of a poor sense of humor. But according to Marc Hye-Knudsen, there may be a psychological benefit to them.

Hye-Knudsen is a humor expert from Denmark who has been analyzing dad jokes. In a recently published study, he says that they can help the emotional development of children.

According to the Danish expert’s research, the jokes show that the father figure is willing to embarrass himself repeatedly. In fact, he seems to relish in the awkwardness of his unfunny jokes.

This subconsciously teaches the children a valuable life lesson. Namely, they learn that it is possible to overcome awkward situations and not feel overwhelmed by them.

“The jokes show their children that embarrassment isn’t fatal,” Hye-Knudsen writes in the published study.

So, the Danish expert encourages fathers to continue to keep smiling and telling their unfunny dad jokes.
