Sometimes, there is nothing like having a sweet dessert in the middle of the afternoon. In recent years, European-style pastries like macarons, financiers, and sweet cakes have been popular dessert choices among members of Korea’s younger generations.

Nowadays, however, many of them are also seeking out Korean traditional desserts that have been enjoyed for centuries. Because of this trend, the so-called “granny-style” drinks and confectionaries have made a comeback.

Yakgwa

Yakgwa is a type of Korean cookie made with flour and honey. It has a round shape with petal-shaped edges.

The dessert is made by frying wheat flour batter and coating it with honey. This gives it a crunchy, golden exterior, while its interior remains chewy.

Yakgwa has been selling like hotcakes recently. Some cafés and restaurants have also used yakgwa to decorate butter cookies, tarts, and other modern confectionaries.

Rice Cakes

Rice cakes are another Korean dessert that our grandparents are fond of. They are also served during traditional holidays like Lunar New Year’s Day.

Recently, young adults in their 20s and 30s have been seeking out injeolmi and black sesame rice cakes. These desserts were considered favorites of elderly people in the past.

Rice cakes are relatively unsweetened and organically made. So, people see them as a healthy alternative to flour desserts.

Sikhye

Sikhye is a Korean traditional beverage that contains grains of cooked rice. It is usually enjoyed during the summer season by adding thin slices of ice.

The sweetness of sikhye comes from barley malt, and the non-glutinous rice adds a delicate flavor. The traditional beverage is also popular because it has less sugar than most other summer refreshments.
