On September 2, crowds of excited art collectors and enthusiasts gathered in South Korea’s capital for the inaugural edition of Frieze Seoul. The event marked the first-ever Frieze Art Fair hosted in Asia.

The Frieze Art Fair is a leading international art fair held annually in London, New York, and Los Angeles. It was launched in 2003 by the founders of Frieze, a contemporary art magazine based in the United Kingdom.

The fair gives visitors a chance to browse and buy world-class art from the best galleries around the world. Guests can also meet and listen to talks from top artists.

Frieze Seoul is the organization’s fourth global location. More than 110 of the world’s most prominent art galleries attended the event at COEX in Seoul’s Gangnam district. It was the second largest among Frieze’s annual fairs.

Important dealers arrived in Seoul hoping to dazzle visitors with their impressive collections. Among the artworks for sale were pieces by superstar artists such as Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Indeed, hundreds of viewers could be seen lining up to take a closer look at paintings like Picasso’s “Girl with a Red Beret and Pompom” and Piet Mondrian’s “Composition With Red, Blue, and Yellow.”

In all, around 70,000 visitors took part in the event. These included local VIPs, such as K-pop stars RM of BTS and Taeyang of Big Bang, as well as “Squid Game” leading man Lee Jung-jae. Additionally, international collectors from countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, and China flew in to check out the event.

When asked why they chose Seoul, event organizers pointed to the city’s booming art scene. Seoul boasts numerous world-class art galleries and museums, and is home to countless talented artists.

“Seoul is a dynamic place with a sophisticated and inquisitive collector base and art world infrastructure,” said director Patrick Lee. “It is an ideal location for an art fair.”
