An annual list of the world’s most powerful passports was recently released. In it, Korea remained in second place, showing how much its citizens are welcomed in other countries. Every year, the Henley Passport Index* ranks the passports of 199 countries around the world. It is compiled by Henley and Partners, a migration consulting firm based in London. The index measures a passport’s power in a simple way. Its holders should have easy access when they travel to other countries. In other words, they can enter a country with just their passport, without needing to apply for a separate travel visa. This openness shows that a country’s passport is trustworthy for various reasons. It may be that the travel document is technologically advanced and the information in it is secure. Also, a high rank implies that a country has friendly relations with other nations. In turn, those other nations trust the country enough to waive the need for a travel visa. This year, Korea was ranked as the second most powerful passport in the world, along with Singapore. The passport-holders of both countries can enter 192 nations without a visa. For Korea, this is two more destinations than the previous year. Furthermore, the nation has maintained a top three rank on the index since 2018. Meanwhile, Japanese passports remained at the top of the list for the fifth consecutive year. They allow hassle-free entry to 193 destinations. Also, after Korea and Singapore, Germany and Spain rounded out the top five, with 190 countries each. The least powerful passport was issued by Afghanistan, as it gets the holder into only 27 countries.
