Korean Companies Build Flying Taxis

In just a few years, flying taxis will be available to ride in Seoul. On November 23, the public was provided a glimpse of this futuristic technology through a demonstration event.

The event was held in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, and organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.* The ministry previously hosted similar events in 2020 and 2021, and various overseas companies working in the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) service showed off their vehicles.

This time, two Korean companies, V-space and Voltline, presented their flying taxis to the public. It was the first time for domestic companies to participate in the event.

V-space gave a demonstration of its vehicle, named the V-speeder. It can carry two passengers at a time and fly up to 95 kilometers per hour.

So, the V-speeder will take only 15 minutes to transport passengers between Gimpo Airport and Gangnam, southern Seoul. This trip usually takes around 90 minutes by car.

The other vehicle at the event was the SKYLA-V2 built by Voltline. It can fly as fast as 90 kilometers per hour and stay in the air for up to 20 minutes.

Both drones have four propellers on their body. This enables them to take off vertically, without the need for a runway.

The ministry expects commercialized UAM services to be launched in Korea by 2025. Then, people will reserve flying taxis through an app and board them at stations, called vertiports.
