A mountaineer named Kim Young-mi recently achieved an astounding feat. She became the first Korean to complete an unassisted solo expedition to the South Pole. The 42-year-old climber began her expedition on November 27, 2022. She set out on a trip from the Hercules Inlet, the southern entry point to the South Pole. An unassisted expedition in polar travel means that any outside help or assistance must not be accepted. This includes navigation flags and even sleigh dogs. So, Kim had to pull a 100-kilogram sleigh full of her food and supplies all the way to her destination. She traveled across Antarctica for a total of 51 days and 1,186.5 kilometers. Finally, she reached the South Pole on January 16 and completed the mission. In 2004, a team of five Korean climbers also carried out an unsupported expedition together. However, Kim is the first Korean to do this on her own. “The hardest part of the journey was pulling the heavy, bulky sleigh almost all day long,” she said in an interview. “However, I felt privileged to appreciate the power of Mother Nature in Antarctica.” On top of conquering the South Pole, Kim has also climbed the highest peaks in all seven continents. She completed this feat in 2008 at the age of 28.
