TikTok Sets Screen Time Limit

The popular social media app, TikTok, recently made an important change to its user policy. Starting March 1, the company set a 60-minute daily screen time limit for all users under 18 years old.

As part of the new policy, underage users will be prompted to enter a passcode after reaching the daily 60-minute viewing limit. From that point on, they are free to continue using the app.

However, TikTok says the extra step will ensure that users are more aware of how much time they are spending on the app. Users may also opt out of the new measure altogether by setting their own screen time controls themselves. TikTok’s new rule came as experts raised concerns over skyrocketing internet addiction.

According to a recent study, daily social media usage among young people has increased by 17 percent since the

start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The average teenager now spends about 8 hours and 39 minutes a day scrolling through social media sites like TikTok, encouraged by their uniquely addictive design.

Since launching in 2017, TikTok has quickly become one of the largest social media platforms on the planet. Boasting over 1 billion active users, the Chinese-owned app allows people to create and upload short videos with background music and filters. The videos often show fun activities such as dancing, challenges, or tutorials.

Research on internet addiction has shown that social media companies use algorithms to effectively hook users by learning their preferences and recommending content they are likely to enjoy. Supporters of TikTok’s decision say the 60-minute prompt will help users to step back from the app and manage their screen time responsibly. Critics, however, say the limit is not strict enough to address the underlying problem.

Whether TikTok’s new policy achieves its intended effect or not will ultimately depend on how seriously users follow its advice.
