Big Plans for Han River

The Seoul Metropolitan Government recently unveiled details of the Great Han River Project. The ambitious plan will serve as a comprehensive blueprint to transform the long riverside of the Han River.

The Han River flows westward through the middle of Seoul, dividing the capital city into southern and northern areas. Currently, there are 11 Han River Parks, and citizens can go there to enjoy many cultural events.

Now, the city government is planning to build even more cultural and business facilities along the river. The large-scale project was introduced by Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon at a news conference in early March.

One of the highlights of the project will be a futuristic Ferris wheel* named Seoul Ring. It is scheduled to open in 2027 at Haneul Park in Sangam district, overlooking the river.

The technologically advanced structure will be hollow in the middle and have no spokes. It will also measure 180 meters high, making it the world’s second-biggest Ferris wheel.

In addition, the city government announced plans for a second Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in the Yeouido district. The first center in Gwanghwamun is the capital city’s main hub for musicals, classical concerts, and other cultural performances.

The second center is also expected to play a similar role. In addition, it will have an observation platform where citizens can appreciate the view of Yeouido Han River Park.

The Great Han River Project includes plans to construct new bridges and pedestrian passageways to enhance the riverside experience. There will even be gondolas that residents and tourists can use to traverse across the river.
