Local governments Battle Selfies

Portofino is a famous fishing village in Italy. With its clear waters and colorful houses, the beautiful tourist destination attracts thousands of visitors every year.

However, people who decide to visit Portofino might want to leave their selfie sticks behind. Recently, the local government made a new law to ban selfies.

According to the law, there are now “no-waiting zones” in areas considered hotspots for tourists. If tourists hang around too long to take the perfect selfie at these areas, they could receive a maximum fine of 275 euros.

The government officials said the ban was created because these popular areas have become extremely busy during peak vacation seasons. Tourists who stop to take selfies have caused massive traffic jams and other chaos on the streets.

Portofino is not the only place that has rules against selfies. Other cities and tourist destinations in Europe, Asia, and the United States have also clamped down on the popular practice. Even Disney World, the world-renowned amusement park, kicks out visitors for using selfie sticks or taking potentially dangerous selfies.

Most of these selfie bans were enacted out of safety concerns. The number of injuries and deaths due to risky selfie shots has increased over the years.

Extreme Response

In central China, authorities recently took an extreme action to prevent a fatal accident from selfies. The incident revolved around the “Test of Courage Rock,” an overhanging section of a cliff in Henan Province.

Hikers of ten stopped at the rock that jutted out over the cliff. They took selfies of themselves standing dangerously close to the edge.

Despite repeated warnings from local officials, the hikers did not stop their risky behavior. Finally, the officials decided that they have had enough.

They brought in construction vehicles equipped with drills and breakers. Then, the overhanging section of the cliff was broken off and permanently removed.
